Impromptu Illinois Trip - Part 2

One post will just never do to hold all the pics from a trip to the Midwest, so here is the rest of the story...

Saturday after the others left to go home and Grandma McKinstry left for dialysis, we again spent another lazy day around the house.

That evening we hit another nostalgic hot spot for my husband - Steak N' Shake. Though I know it is horribly unhealthy, especially when pregnant, I was kind of eager to go myself and get a Wisconsin Buttery Burger. (It is a good think we don't have these nearby or my arteries would be clogged for sure.) Caleb was most excited about the milkshake with M&M bits inside and got pretty tickled every time a candy piece got sucked up through the straw into his mouth.

Then, came more swimming of course.  We stopped at Target to get Hadley a life jacket her size to see if that worked better than the float but were sorely disappointed to find that rather than holding her upright, the thing just kept flipping her on her back. I know this was for safety reasons so babies don't end up face down in the water, but it was a nuisance for us to try to keep her upright. We ended up stripping it off and just helping her stay afloat ourselves.

Sunday we skipped church to spend a more time with Grandma McKinstry since it was the only day she didn't have dialysis, chemo, or a doctor's appointment. Caleb spent a portion of the day playing PacMan while Hadley enjoyed her grandparents' childhood rocking chairs. The Little People were played with quite a bit more that day too, and Hadley found a new use for them - finger puppets.

Monday we hung out at the house again, and Dave went with his parents to the doctor for awhile during the kids' nap time. When the came back, Grandma and Caleb had some good fun together lining up and counting all the Little People over and over. Caleb, who's mastered up to the number 12, is eager to practice counting. He definitely had a good teacher in his math major/college instructor grandmother.

Just like the trip there, the trip home went smoothly. We relied quite a bit on the DVD players my mom bought and tried to be on the road mostly when the kids would be napping or going to sleep for the night which really helped. Like we usually do, we made a stop at Cracker Barrel to eat and stretch our legs, providing a great place for Caleb to check out the toys and for Hadley to rock to her heart's content.

The only bump we hit really was that about five hours from home I started having painful contractions and thought we were going to have to stop in Wheeling, WV and have a baby! Not wanting to get Dave too shook up, I waited for awhile to tell him and just kept driving while keeping an eye on the clock, counting the minutes in between and how long each lasted. Two hours or so later, everything stopped. What a relief!

I'm not sure when our next trip to IL will be but sure am glad we got to go this time. :)

  1. I love Steak & Shake, too! I thought they were only in Florida. We need one here! (or not) Glad you made this trip and all went well. :)
